Nikon 200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR

Nikon is currently one of the top figures in the world of digital photography not only because of their high performing digital SLR cameras, but the very lens that these cameras use as well. Of course the performance of each lens varies depending on the category that they represent and how the lens will be used. The performance of the lens also varies based on the body of the camera as well. When it comes to quality, most of the lenses that are priced above $1,000 demonstrate top of the line quality thanks to the different technologies and physical features that are built into each lens. It is easy to wonder if the quality can get any better than that especially when combined with a flagship Nikon camera. But with the Nikon 200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR lens, the bar for quality is highly raised here as this highly priced lens literally blows all of the other lenses out of the water.

Design & Construction

The Nikon 200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR immediately stands out with a sophisticated design that greatly shows how much power is actually built-in to the lens. It uses a different hood (HK-31) which grants the lens a boost in both performance and detection and sports a new G-design allowing users to select aperture settings from selected DSLR models and display useful information regarding the ambient light exposure and flash processes. It uses the 9 rounded diaphragm blades to achieve natural blur and has the Super ED glass that is highly adaptable to any environment even during instances of rapid temperature changes. The only downside to the overall design is that it can be heavy to use when going handheld, but at a first glance, the Nikon 200mm f/2G ED-IF shows superiority.

Actual user review:
“I purchased this lens in order to take advantage of the 2.0 f-stop in horribly lit gymnasiums. This lens paired with my D2Hs is outstanding. It has to be the best volleyball lens in existence. The only drawback is that it weighs a TON (better start doing your push-ups!). But, when you see the shots it produces, the weight is no longer a problem. I used a 70-200VR prior to this purchase, and it is/was a great lens, but it isn’t even in the 200′s class. If you shoot basketball or volleyball this is a great lens if you can afford it. If you can’t, you only need one kidney. I have now paired this lens with a D3 – OUTSTANDING.” – F.Gumby (NE,USA)

Features & Specifications

Unlike the other five telephoto lenses currently available, the Nikon 200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR impresses with a slew of technologies that are present in other heavy duty lenses. On the sharpness side, the Nikon 200mm ED-IF excels greatly eliminated the need of stopping the lens down as the sharpness levels are exceptional when wide open. The sharpness does increase at 2.8-4, but at this caliber, it is usually unnecessary to use that. The colors and contrast are also much better than the other telephoto lenses.

All of the annoyances that photographers experience with other lenses like chromatic aberration are virtually absent regardless of the body because of the Super ED glass that was mentioned earlier. It achieves this by eliminating secondary spectrum and offers lower dispersion. The Super Integrated Coating technology is also present and further enhances the color reproduction while minimizing both ghosting and flare.

It is the only telephoto lens to support VR operation which gives the lens a shutter speed advantage three stops faster. It is also suitable for use in moving vehicles including boats, planes, and cars thanks to the active vibration mode. This VR mode can be turned on and off and has automatic detection of panning.

The Nikon 200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S is also the only AF-S camera in the series which means faster and more silent operation compared to the rest along with added technologies including internal focusing which makes focuses smoother and the M/A mode that allows quick switching from auto to manual focus without the lag. It also has the Silent Wave Motor that keeps the autofocusing accurate and silent allowing it to focus as close as 6.2 ft.

Bottom Line

The price is obviously the showstopper here and handholding the camera with this lens can prove to be quite a challenge so this Nikon 200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens is strictly made for professionals that want to dive into real professional photography in sports, fashion, photojournalism, and other special occasions. It can literally turn small cameras into real powerhouses and Nikon flagship cameras into true performers. It also boasts great performance with teleconverters whether it is the TC-20E II, TC-17E II, or TC-14E II. The only thing that it lacks is the Nano Crystal Coat, but that isn’t enough to dethrone this telephoto lens.
