Design & Construction

The design of the Nikon 28mm f/2.8D AF Lens looks so similar to the Nikon 24mm f/2.8D AF Lens that it is hard to believe that this lens costs around half the price when compared to the 24mm. It takes the form of a screwdriver lens which means that doesn’t have a built-in flower-type lens hood to help in minimizing flaring issues. What it does have however is some good frontal protection thanks to the metal lens hood that makes this lens compare fairly well with the others in terms of build quality. On top of that, nobody should have trouble in carrying this lens around as it only weighs 7.4 ounces hinting that it is a lens that can be used by any and all photographers.

Features & Specifications

The Nikon 28mm f/2.8D AF Lens has 74 degrees of angle coverage which is just enough for candid photographers do whatever they like and other travelers to take nice travel photos and good portraits at the same time. Average users will be impressed with the performance of the lens when it comes to classic handling, low light operations, and overall quickness in regular usage.

The color rendition is surprisingly good and the perspective remains pretty natural even when used on film cameras. At f/5.6, the resolution is great with emphasis on the corners giving more reasons for general photographers to take this lens wherever they go.

One of its major weaknesses though lies on the chromatic aberration or color fringing which is more noticeable on high-contrast images. However, flare issues remain minimal and it manages to pair rather well with flagship models including the older D2 series and the D700 as well.

Bottom Line

The lack of attractive technologies does not by any means make the Nikon 28mm f/2.8D AF Lens a camera lens for limited usage. It still manages to impress in the general areas when it comes to quality and the overall design and lightweight profile makes this a great lens to have around for travelers and candid photographers. Perhaps the best reason to get this lens is the price as it isn’t a special purpose lens and should be good enough to take some decent photos that ordinary point-and-shoot cameras cannot attain. It is a great camera lens for what it is worth.

Average User Rating:

  • “I received this lens approximately three weeks ago and I’ve been using it heavily ever since. The quality of the images, including color, is outstanding and the lens is very light which makes it an easy ‘walking’ lens. I am especially impressed with the night photos I’ve taken at F2.8. They’re very sharp and the color is very good. This is a great lens for the price – highly recommended.” – J.Ellis (USA)
  • “This is a great choice for a full-frame camera like the D700 or D3X. Nice and sharp, decent curvature and distortion, and high contrast in the face of backlighting that would give other lenses fits of flare and low contrast. It’s a no-brainer at the price.” – P.Grupp (NY,USA)
